Immune Boosting Foods

With the outbreak of COVID we’ve seen multiple lockdowns, large scale sanitation processes, hand sanitiser, masks masks masks, vaccinations, etc. Sadly however, what’s been missed from that dialogue is information on boosting your immune system naturally with supplements and good nutrition. Rather than masking symptoms of ill-health with short-term remedies and regulations, it’s never been more important to arm yourself with a strong foundation of knowledge of how to protect your health and immunity, naturally.

I’ve put together a list of five of my favourite immune boosting foods that are accessible and easy to incorporate into your daily diet.

1.     Garlic contains allicin, one of nature’s stronger antibiotics. Garlic also contains an antifungal agent, making it extremely balancing to the digestive system, helping to clear out excess bad bacteria in the body. Sometimes I will literally cut half a clove of garlic into pill size bites and swallow them whole when I’m not well. I wish I was kidding.

2.     Ginger. A serious powerhouse, not to be looked over. Commonly known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits but also incredible for boosting your immunity. This is made possible by the compounds in ginger that help to balance your gut flora, which is where roughly 70% of your immune system lives!

3.     Citrus of any kind is high in vitamin C and is the most common and well-known way to boost your immunity. Vitamin C contributes to immune defence by supporting various cellular function of both the innate and adaptive immune system.

4.     Blueberries, the most humble superfood to boost your immunity. Blueberries contain flavonoids – a type of antioxidant that can help reduce damage to cells and boost your immune system.

5.     Bone Broth has been credited for signs of overall improvement in the immune system and the human body at large. As previously mentioned before, a happy gut equates to a strong immune system. Bone broth is extremely healing for the gut, which allows natural immune responses to be re-established. Bone broth is also linked to improved mood, energy levels, and healthy sleep.
